  • Pioneers of Alaska Igloo 6 donates $10,000 to Whale Project

    The Pioneers of Alaska Men's and Women's Igloo #6 presented $10,000 to the Whale Project, the community group which will place a life-sized humpback whale sculpture and fountain on Juneau's waterfront in recognition of the 50th anniversary of Alaska statehood.

    As envisioned by sculptor R.T. "Skip" Wallen, the bronze whale will be part of the Sea Walk and rise out of an infinity pool surrounded by a plaza.

    The Douglas Fourth of July Committee wishes to thank the following organizations for their contributions in helping us build the performance pavilion in Savikko Park.

    Due to generous donation by the Pioneers of Alaska Igloo 6, the pavilion has been named the Pioneer Pavilion.

  • 10.18.2010 - First Juneau Alaska Day Ball Held

    Juneau will celebrate Alaska Day this year on Oct. 18.

    The celebration will be in the form of a ball and will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. at Centennial Hall.

    The emcee willbe no other than the illustrious Mike Race.

    Festivities will include a welcome dance from our First Alaskans, represented by the Yees Ku Oo Dancers, our National Anthem and the Alaska Flag Song led by the Alaskan Youth Choir, followed by a short tribute to the actual transfer of 1867.

    The evening will be filled with ballroom dance music and jazz tunes presented by Alaska's Kit and the Kaboodles.

    Wanting to be more community-facing and demonstrating that the Juneau POA is a family-friendly organization, we elected to participate in the Douglas 4th of July festivities by donating soap box derby cars that could be used as loaner cars for kids who weren’t fortunate enough to have a parent make them one.

  • 2024 Pioneer Forget Me Not Tea

    Our inaugural Pioneer Forget-Me-Not Tea was held at the Harbor Dinner Club on April 13th.  Highlighting the Gold Rush days, this tea featured live music, a fashion show, trays stacked with delicious sweets and savories, in a room beautifully decorated under the preview of our Queen Janice Holst.

  • Telephone Hill Historic Neighborhood Advocacy

    POA members have conducted a series of tours of the historic homes on Telephone Hill for elected Juneau officials and the State Historic Preservation Office staff.

    These homes were the first built in the Juneau area, long before the city was laid out, and include the oldest continually occupied home in Alaska.

  • Lone Sailor Memorial

    As part of our celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence and the 250 Anniversary of the formation of the US Navy, the Pioneers of Alaska are working with the Juneau Navy League, the VFW, the American Legion and the City and Borough of Juneau to install a Lone Sailor memorial on the boardwalk.
