Membership Process & Vetting

Membership Review Process
Applications for membership are reviewed by the officers and membership committee of the Juneau Igloo to confirm eligibility and ensure that application information is complete. This review is intended to verify historical eligibility requirements, answer any questions about the application, and help introduce prospective members to the organization.
The Pioneers of Alaska Juneau Igloo does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender, political belief, or national origin. Membership decisions are made in accordance with the Constitution and By-Laws of the Igloo and are based solely on eligibility and the applicant’s interest in supporting the mission of the organization.
The Juneau Igloo does not use a “blackball” or secret rejection process. If questions arise during the review of an application, applicants may be contacted for clarification or additional information so that the process remains fair and transparent.
Once an application has been accepted, the applicant will be notified and scheduled for initiation at the beginning of the next regular meeting of the Juneau Igloo. If the applicant cannot attend that meeting, the initiation may be rescheduled or conducted remotely when appropriate.
Upon initiation, a new member is received into full fellowship of the Juneau Igloo and automatically becomes a member of the Grand Igloo of the Pioneers of Alaska. This membership provides the privilege of attending meetings and participating in activities at other Igloos throughout the State of Alaska.
The purpose of this process is simply to ensure that new members understand the history, values, and responsibilities of the Igloo before being received into full fellowship.
Fun Fact: About half of the members of the Alaska Territorial Legislature were Pioneers of Alaska, and our honorary members include President Warren Harding and the Juneau Little Sister of Liberty.

2024 Woodstacking Contest
The Pioneers' four-person judging panel included Patricia Meyers, Kara Johnson, John George, and Men's President Brad Austin. Women's President Dorene Lorenz hosted the judging at her Mendenhall Valley home, warming up the judges with her grandmother's homemade potato soup and fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies.
The judges traveled from Douglas Island to Sunshine Cover to view Juneau citizens' best efforts at preparing for the winter. They were suitably impressed.

Winners:
First Place received an oilcloth and leather POA Juneau wood tote. Eric and April Hotchkiss's multiple stacks for a total of 240 also won the Woodsy category for their creative and artistic stacks.

Bill Schattenberg took Second Place and received the classic tome, Norwegian Wood. Schattenberg's multiple stacks came in at 23 cords and also won the Baby Got Wood category for most wood quantity.

Diane Kyser won the Get That Wood award hands-down for the most accessible stack. Her home enviably displays 8.31 cords of well-stacked wood every few feet all the way around her house.

Brian Thatcher's 4.75 cords took home the Stacked category, winning with multiple meticulous round stacks.
